FAST INNOVATORS WON WATER AND SANITATION HACKATHON

A team FAST-INNOVATORS of five students from Lahore Campus won the Sanitation Hackathon that was held by the WORLD BANK, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) and Urban Unit on Saturday-Sunday.

The team consists of

MUHAMMAD JUNAID KHAN (09-4095)
SALMAN YOUSAF (09-4147)
SHEHROZE FAROOQI (09-4104)
SHAHZADA ALI SALEEM (Competition Chair ACM) (09-4052)
MUHAMMAD JUNAID GILL (Event Co-ordinator IEEE) (10-4075)

The team worked consecutively for 36 hours and came up with the innovative idea which impressed the judges.

The winning teams will get a chance to:

Work with the WORLD BANK and other governmental organizations closely.
The winners will be presenting Pakistan at an international level in the Application development competition in Spain.
They will be getting a chance to travel to Washington in February 2013 for an international IT event and will get a chance to interact with professional all around the world .
They will also be participating in Plan9 which is an event planned by PITB as announced by the Chairman PITB Dr.Umer Saif in the orientaition .

We wish them success and a bright future ahead.

Fee Structure Notification – Bahria University Karachi Campus

Students (from second to fifth Semester of every Discipline) are informed, that competent authority had imposed an increase of Rs. 1000/- per semester/per student w.e.f Fall 2012 semester of all existing students as an Additional Tuition Fee Charges (this was missed out while issuing semester’s fee challan in September 2012). All CR’s are directed to collect the challans of their respective classes from Account Office on Tuesday 27th November, 2012 positively. Charges are to be deposited in Account Office latest by 7 December, 2012 (SHARP).

UOG and PRCS forming a YC

SSC-UOG is organizing a special multi purposive Session for its Students on disaster management, First Aid, Youth and Voluntarism etc at HH-campus of the University. The session is a collaborative adventure of SSC and Disaster Management Cell of (PRCS) Pakistan Red Crescent Society.
It will held on November 27, 2012 at 11:00am in S-07 hall of the said campus.
At the end of the session there is plan to introduce a “UOG Youth Club” as well, co-curricular officer said.

FAST Cyber Gaming League (FCGL)

G3n.X Gaming Society is presenting ”FAST Cyber Gaming League” (FCGL).
G3N.X is the only society in FAST-NU, founded for the sole purpose of promoting electronic gaming amongst the students of FAST-NU, Lahore.
It was established to provide a platform for the students of FAST-NU Lahore to improve their skills in different electronic games, to form teams for different electronic games, that would represent FAST-NU Lahore in different institutes through out Pakistan and to help gamers learn about their strengths and weaknesses in different electronic games.
The society is organizing a gaming competition on 26th November 2012.
This is going to be the first event of g3nx gaming society in fall 2012. Just be quick and get your registration done as soon as possible because you really cannot miss.

UoG had “First Aid Training” Lecture

Yesterday, the Department of Engineering organized a special “First Aid Training” lecture for the students of the university. The lecture was given by the officers of 1122-Rescue Service, in which they shared the organization’s performance since its launching in the province and some experiences during their hard jobs.

During the lecture an officer portioned-out a problem which they are facing by the prank calls (which are in thousands/month) of the citizens. He said; this problem is getting very swear and needs to be taken very seriously. He further shared a few cases of such prank calls which later caused the death of somebody at some-where else because that person was not entertained due to this irresponsible behaviour of the prankster.

They asked the students to come-up and play their productive role being the educated part of the society.

FAST defeats LSE to win the Trophy!

FAST-NU wins the trophy defeating Lahore School of Economics (LSE) by 4 points in the held at FAST-NU Lahore.

Overall, it was a well contested event and the immense support from the crowd was the decisive factor!

Results were as follows:

Cricket – FAST (by 8 wickets with 4 overs remaining)

Futsal Female – LSE (1-1, Penalties)

Tennis – LSE (3-4)

Push Hockey – FAST (2-2, 7-6 on Penalties)

Volleyball Female – FAST (2-0)

Basketball Female – LSE

Basketball Male – LSE

Volleyball Male – FAST (3-0)

Arm Wrestling – FAST (3-0)

Football Male – FAST (2-1)

Overall : FAST = 12 Points, LSE = 8 Points.

A great achievement by all the teams. Congratulations to every FASTian.

UoG has become 2nd university to start work on simulation research projects

The department of Computer Sciences UoG is working on Distributed Computing and Simulation research Projects (Cluster Computing, Grid Computing and in future the Cloud Computing) in High Speed Simulation Lab of the HH-Campus. By starting it, UoG has become the 2nd University of the Pakistan (after NUST) who have started the work in this area.

The Grid is alternative Super Computer which could be used for Missiles Production, its testing, Weather Forecasting etcetera but here the students are working on “BUSINESS SIMULATION SOFTWARE” which will be a new production and research in the field. The project has been named; “GRID SERVICES FOR COMMERCIAL SIMULATION PACKAGES” and is a Research and Development focused work at there.

In the lab an efficient team of students Waqas Ahmed, Qasim Ali, Kashif Aziz, Ghulam Mustafa, Gulsher Ali, Hafiz Umair, Ahmed, Mehwish, Miss Reema and many more are working on the project, which are CS-faculty, MS-fellows and under-Grad students of the department. The project was started by Fall-2012 and expected time to complete is spring-2013. The team have started its work by connecting 9 computers at start and later will continue increasing the numbers by the success in it.

Asst.Prof. Numan Riaz and an instructor Mr.Navonil Mustafee from Swansea University UK are supervising the project.

While sharing the aims, a team-member said; running the stimulation software is the main task of us and we hope we will do it with-in the expected time. He further added; we shall not leave it on its completion rather our coming fellows will explore more in the area and will serve the nation in more advance and better way. It will also help in giving fast and comparatively good networking at the campus too.
